Travel Guide: Getting to Mexico for Ibogaine Treatment
Everything you need to know about the logistics of traveling to Mexico for ibogaine therapy — from passports to packing.
Before You Travel
- Passport: A valid US passport is required for air travel to Mexico. For land border crossings (Baja California), a passport card or REAL ID-compliant driver's license may suffice, but a passport is recommended.
- Medical clearance: Complete all pre-screening requirements (EKG, blood work) before traveling. Most clinics arrange this remotely.
- Medication tapering: If required, begin tapering well in advance under medical guidance.
- Travel insurance: Consider travel medical insurance. Note that most policies exclude "experimental treatments," but coverage for travel-related issues (flight cancellation, lost luggage) is still valuable.
Getting There
Baja California Clinics (Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada)
- Fly into San Diego International Airport (SAN)
- Most clinics arrange border crossing and transfer — typically 20-45 minutes
- Some patients drive across the border themselves
- CBX (Cross Border Xpress) connects directly to Tijuana airport
Riviera Maya Clinics (Cancun, Playa del Carmen)
- Fly into Cancun International Airport (CUN) — direct flights from most major US cities
- Clinic transfers typically arranged from the airport
- Flight time: 2-4 hours from most US cities
What to Pack
- Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
- Any approved medications (in original prescription bottles)
- Personal comfort items (photos, journal, meaningful objects)
- Books or music for recovery days
- Chargers and adapters (Mexico uses the same outlets as the US)
- A journal — many people find writing during integration invaluable
What NOT to Bring
- Any non-approved substances or medications
- Excessive electronics or work materials (this is a time to disconnect)
- Large amounts of cash (clinics accept wire transfers or cards)
Communication During Treatment
Most clinics have WiFi, and your US phone will likely work in Mexico (check your carrier's international plan). However, during the treatment itself (1-2 days), you'll be disconnected. Clinics can facilitate emergency communication with family. Many patients find it helpful to designate a family contact person who can communicate with the clinic on their behalf.
Returning Home
Plan for a quiet, low-stress return. The first week after treatment is a critical integration period. If possible, arrange to have someone pick you up from the airport, have your home prepared with healthy food, and clear your schedule for at least a week. The transition from the clinic environment back to daily life is an important part of the healing process.
